The Poem That Contained the Names of the Qur’an’s Surahs

In the year 1979 CE / 1400 AH, the Arabic section of the BBC organized a poetry competition on the occasion of the passing of 1400 years since the Hijrah of the Prophet ﷺ.

Twelve hundred poets took part in the competition, and the first prize winner was not Arab, but African—from Senegal—a poet named Abdullah Bah.

What follows is his winning poem, which he titled “The Nuniyyah of the Qur’an.”

The poem includes all the surahs of the Qur’an, arranged in the order in which they appear in the Noble Mushaf.

The Poem:

Open the Book of God—indeed, Al-Fātiḥah

Is an opening, a proof, and the seven oft-repeated verses.

Al-Baqarah and Āl ʿImrān are like a shading cloud,

And upon An-Nisāʾ are the tables of the Most Merciful.

Make of Al-Anʿām a devoted offering and tend them

On the heights of Al-Aʿrāf and in the valleys.

To God belong Al-Anfāl and the family of Muhammad,

And At-Tawbah enfolds Yūnus in safety.

Did you not know that Hūd was a messenger,

And that Yūsuf was the most beautiful of youths?

When you hear the thunder rumble with its voice,

Know that water surely flows.

Listen to Ibrāhīm, and do not heed

What the people of Al-Ḥijr said in denial.

When the bee received revelation from her Lord,

She longed for the Isrāʾ across the lands.

We know there is a cave that is secure,

And that Maryam is the purest of women.

And that Ṭā Hā gathered all the prophets

In Al-Masjid Al-Aqṣā without deficiency.

The pilgrimage to the House is the fifth pillar,

And the believers came to it in submission.

Light clothes them for their noble traits,

And their perfect description is in Al-Furqān.

Drink from the poets knowledge that benefits,

You will gain an eloquent tongue and clear speech.

Know that the ants brought forth their tale—

Stories—and the house of the spider is frail.

The Romans were defeated in the lowest land,

So act upon what Luqmān advised.

Prostrate humbly before your Lord,

And beware of parties doomed to loss.

Sabāʾ, then Fāṭir, then Yā Sīn after them,

And Aṣ-Ṣāffāt protect against Satan.

Learn Ṣād, do not forget Az-Zumar,

Ghāfir, and recite Fuṣṣilat with precision.

Hold fast to Ash-Shūrā, this is our path,

Preserve Az-Zukhruf, do not be heedless.

The Hour is coming, and among its signs

Is what the Qur’an mentions of the Smoke.

There you will see all creation kneeling,

Even the people of Al-Aḥqāf gathered together.

Know that Muhammad opened the world,

And the greatest victory came after eight.

He dwelt among Al-Ḥujurāt all his life,

Reciting Qāf at every time.

Adh-Dhāriyāt explain their verses in detail,

And Aṭ-Ṭūr is musk spreading through the corners.

The star is a light by which creation is guided,

And likewise the moon is a light from the Merciful.

God has informed that the Day of Al-Wāqiʿah

Is decisive, and judgment belongs to the Judge.

He sent down iron—Glory be to Him—

And heard Khawlah when they disputed.

The Gathering will come, a thousand days long,

Where humans and jinn are tested.

You will see the angels in a single rank,

On a Friday with no equal.

The veils of the hypocrites will be torn away,

On the Day of Mutual Loss falsehood is exposed.

As for divorce, do not rush to utter it—

Treat it like prohibition on the scale.

The dominion belongs to God, the Pen His creation,

The First, Exalted, Creator of all beings.

Al-Ḥāqqah is true, and among its names

Is the Day of Ascension when the moons are eclipsed.

Nūḥ was a prophet sent by his Lord,

And the jinn are a truth mentioned in the Qur’an.

When Al-Muzzammil and Al-Muddaththir come,

On the Day of Resurrection mankind is raised.

Al-Mursalāt bring glad tidings of the news,

And An-Nāziʿāt shake bodies violently.

“He frowned at the blind man,” so revelation said,

“No, O Muhammad, O great in rank.”

When the folding of the sun comes, then the splitting,

Recited—and for the defrauders there is fire.

You will see the sky split, full of constellations,

And the piercing star above, close at hand.

You will see faces mentioned in Al-Ghāshiyah,

And the dawn rising over the lands.

The sun shines after night at forenoon,

And Ash-Sharḥ is for one who attains gardens.

The fig and the olive—sweet is their fruit,

And with Iqraʾ in Al-ʿAlaq two commands began.

It was sent down on the blessed Night of Decree,

On the odd nights, not the even, of Ramadan.

Then it descended to the Messenger gradually,

And Al-Bayyinah is our clear proof.

When you see the earth shaken around you,

And the charging steeds cry out on the field,

You will know the Striking Calamity has announced itself—

So why the rivalry for abundance, O knower?

By Time—indeed slander is a vile act,

Woe to every backbiter and defamer.

The elephant retreated in disgrace

When Quraysh failed to protect the sanctuary.

Who withholds small kindness is denied a drink

From the flowing river of Al-Kawthar.

The disbelievers’ banners were overturned,

And victory on the day of conquest was for faith.

We know that Tabbat and Al-Masad

Are a woe whose punishment the couple will taste.

So hold fast to sincerity and cling to its rope—

Without it, no good deed is accepted.

Know that God alone disposes of His affair,

Lord of the Daybreak, mankind, and all existence.

With this I have concluded my poem;

I have named it “The Nuniyyah of the Qur’an.”

القصيدة التي حملت أسماء سور القرآن الكريم

في عام 1979 م/1400هجري نظّم القسم العربي بهيئة الإذاعة البريطانية مسابقة شعرية بمناسبة مرور 1400 سنة على هجرة النبي صلى اللّٰه عليه و آله و سلم ، فاشترك في هذه المسابقة ألف ومئتان من الشعراء، ولم يكن الفائز الأول في حلبتها عربيا، بل كان إفريقيّا من السنغال شاعر اسمه عبدالله باه.
وفيما يلي قصيدته الفائزة والتي أسماها نونية القرآن .

لله درك من شاعر

القصيدة :-

افتح كتاب الله إن الفاتحة
فتحٌ وبرهانٌ وسبع مثاني

بقرٌ وعمران كظلِّ سحابة
وعلى النساء موائد الرحمن

اجعل من الأنعام قُربى وارعها
في ذروة الأعراف والوديان

للهِ أنفال وآل محمدٍ
والتوبة تغشى يونس بأمان

أوما علمت بأنَّ هودا مرسل
وبأنّ يوسف أجمل الشبّان

وإذا سمعت الرعد حنَّ بصوتهِ
فاعلم بأنّ الماء ذو جريان

واسمع لإبراهيم لاتسمع لما
قد قال أهل الحِجر من نُكران

والنحل لمّا ربها أوحى لها
تاقت إلى الإسراء في الأوطان

ولقد علمنا أنّ كهفاً آمناً
وبأنَّ مريم أطهر النسوان

وبأنَّ طهَ أمَّ كلَّ الانبياء
في المسجد الاقصى بلا نقصان

وبأن حج البيت ركنٌ خامس
والمؤمنون أتوهُ في إذعان

والنور يكسوهم لحُسنِ خصالهم
ولهم كمال الوصف في الفرقان

وانهل من الشعراء علماً نافعاً
تكسب لساناً ناطقاً وبيان

واعلم بأنَّ النّمل جاء حديثها
قصصاً وبيت العنكبوت مهانِ

والروم في أدنى البلاد تدنَّسَت
واعمل بما أوصى به لقمان

واسجد لربك خاشعاً متذللاً
واحذر من احزابٍ ذوي خسران

سبأ وفاطر ثمّ ياسين بعدها
والصافات تقي من الشيطان

صادٌ تعلَّم والزمر لاتنسها
غافر ورتّل فُصِلَت باتقان

شورى فالزمها وهذا نهجنا
والزخرف احفظ لاتكُن ولهان

والساعة آتية ومن اشراطها
ماجاء في القرآن من دخّان

وبها ترى كل الخلائق جاثية
حتى قُرى الأحقاف تجتمعان

واعلم بأن محمد فتح الدُنى
والفتح الاعظم جاء بعد ثمان

وأقام في الحجرات طول حياتهِ
ومرتلاً(قافٍ) بكل أوان

والذاريات مفصلاً آياتها
والطور مسكٌ فاح في الاركان

والنجم نورٌ للخلائق تهتدي
وكذا القمر نورٌ من الرحمن

والله أخبر أن يوم الواقعة
فَصلٌ وأن الحكم للديان

جعل الحديد منزلاُ سبحانه
وسمع لخولة يوم يجتدلان

والحشر آتٍ ألف يوم طولهُ
وبه ترى الثقلان يمتحنانِ

وبه ترى الأملاك صفاً واحداً
في يوم جمعة ماله من ثانِ

واهل النفاق تهتكت استارهم
يوم التغابُن يُعرَفُ البهتان

أما الطلاق فلا تبادر لفظهُ
واجعلهُ كالتحريم في الميزانِ

والمُلك لله والقلم مخلوقهُ
الأول تعالى خالق الثقلان

والحآقّة حقٌ ومن أسمائها
يوم المعارج يخسف القمران

نوحٌ نبيٌّ مرسلٌ من ربه
والجِنّ حق جاء في القران

وإذا المزمِّل والمدثر جاءتا
يوم القيامة يبعث الإنسان

والمرسلات أتت تبشّرُ بالنبأ
والنازعات تزلزل الابدان

عبسى من الأعمى فقال الوحي لا
لا يامحمد ياعظيم الشأنِ

وإذا أتى التكوير آن الانفطار
يتلو وللمطففين نيرانِ

وترى انشقاقاً في السما ذات البروج
والطارق الأعلى تراهُ دانِ

وترى وجوهاً ذِكرها في الغاشية
وترى طلوع الفجر في البلدان

والشمس بعد الليل تُشرِقُ بالضحى
والانشراح لفائزٍ بجنان

والتين والزيتون حلوٌ طَلعُها
وبدأ بإقرأ في العلق أمران

في ليلة القدر المبارك أُنزلَت
في الوتر لا في الشفع من رمضان

ثم توالى للرسول منجّماً
والبيّنة في قولنا برهان

وإذا رأيت الأرض حولك زلزلت
والعاديات تصيح في الميدان

لعلمت أن القارعة قد آذنت
فلما التكاثُر يا أخا العرفانِ

والعصر إن الهمز شينٌ فعلهُ
والويل للهمّاز والطعّان

والفيل أدبر في شرودٍ عندما
عجزت قُريشٌ عن حِمى الأوطان

من يمنع الماعون يحرم شربةً
من ماء نهر الكوثر السيّان

والكافرون تنكست راياتهم
والنصر يوم الفتح للإيمانِ

ولقد علمنا أنَّ تبت والمسد
ويلٌ يذوق عذابهُ الزوجانِ

فاحرص على الإخلاص والزم حبلهُ
فبغيرهِ لايقبل الاحسانِ

واعلم بأنَّ الله مالك أمرهِ
ربّ الفلق والناس والأكوان

وبذا أكون قد ختمت قصيدتي
