The Meaning of (Ka Ha Ya Ain Sad) for Lovers
On the authority of Malik ibn Dinar (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
I set out on a pilgrimage to the Sacred House of Allah one year.
While I was on the road, I saw a man walking without provisions or a mount, so I greeted him.
He returned my greeting. I said to him:
Where are you from? He said: From his house. I said to him:
And where are you going? He said: To his house. I said to him:
Where are the provisions? He said: On them. I said to him: The road will not end without food and drink. Do you have anything with you?
He said: Yes, I was provided with five letters when I left my country. I said: What are they? He said: The Most High’s saying: ((Ka Ha Ya ‘Ain Sad)) I said: What is the meaning of “Ka Ha Ya ‘Ain Sad?” He said: As for His saying (Ka Kaf), it is the sufficient, and as for (Ha), it is the guide, and as for (Ya), it is the shelter, and as for (Ain), it is the knower, and as for (Sad), it is the truthful. And whoever accompanies: the sufficient, the guide, the shelter, the knowledgeable, and the truthful, he will not be lost nor He fears and does not need provisions or a mount.” Malik said: When I heard this from him, I took off my shirt to wear it for him, but he refused to wear it and said: “O Sheikh, nakedness is better than your shirt. The lawful things in this world are for reckoning, and the unlawful things are for punishment.” When night fell, he would raise his head toward the sky and say: “O He whom acts of obedience do not benefit and whom sins do not harm, grant me what does not benefit You and forgive me what does not harm You.”
When the people entered ihram and responded, I said to him: “Why not?” Will you respond? He said: O Sheikh… I fear that if I say, “At your service,” he will say to me, “Neither at your service nor at your pleasure. I will not listen to your words nor look at you.” Then he went away from me and disappeared from my sight. I did not see him again until Mina, weeping and reciting poetry:
The beloved who is satisfied by the shedding of my blood — My blood is lawful for him in the sacred and lawful.
By God, if my soul knew who it loved, it would stand on its head, more honorable than the feet.
O my blamer, do not blame me for loving him, for if only I had seen what I “You have seen, but you have not blamed.”
A group of people circumambulate the Kaaba with a limb. If they circumambulated by Allah, He would have made them independent of the Sacred Sanctuary.
People have a pilgrimage, and I have a pilgrimage to my dwelling. Sacrificial animals are offered, and I offer my life and blood.
Then he said, “O Allah, people have slaughtered and sought to draw near to You with their sacrifices and offerings, but I have nothing but myself to draw near to You with, so accept it from me.” Then he raised his gaze to the sky while weeping, then he gasped and fell dead. May Allah have mercy on him. I prepared him for burial and covered him with the earth.
That night I spent contemplating his situation. …
I saw him in a dream and said to him: What did Allah do to you?! He said: He did to me as He did to the martyrs of Badr, and He gave me more. I said: Why did He give you more? He said: Because they were killed with the swords of the infidels, and I was killed out of love for the Almighty!!!
