Giving and Patience

It is narrated that Ḥātim al-Aṣamm, one of the righteous followers, studied under Shaykh Shaqīq al-Balkhī for thirty years. One day, Ḥātim asked Shaqīq al-Balkhī for permission to travel and visit his family. He did so and stayed with them for a year. When he began to long for his teacher, he decided to return to him.

When he met him, Shaqīq al-Balkhī asked,
“How are your people?”

Ḥātim replied,
“We are a people who, when we are given, we are thankful; and when we are tested, we are patient.”

Shaqīq al-Balkhī said,
“And what is special about that? That is the state of the dogs among us—if you give them, they wag their tails, and if you withhold from them, they endure patiently.”

Ḥātim, being intelligent and seeking understanding, asked,
“If this is the state of the dogs among you, then what is the state of the people?”

Shaqīq al-Balkhī replied,
“We are a people who, when we are given, we are patient; and when we are tested, we are thankful. Giving requires patience so that wealth is not spent in corrupt ways, and affliction requires gratitude, because God has placed us in the rank of the prophets and the righteous, who are known for being tested.”

العطاء والصبر

يحكي ان حاتم الاصم أحد الاتباع الصالحين كان يتعلم علي يد الشيخ الشقيق البلخى لمدة 30 سنة..الي ان جاء يوم طلب حاتم الاصم من الشقيق البلخى انه يسافر لزيارة أهله …وفعلا سافر وامضي هناك سنة..ولما حس بإشتياق لشيخه قرر إنه يرجع اليه …ولما قابله سأله الشقيق البلخى : كيف أخبار قومك ؟

فرد عليه حاتم :نحن قوم إذا أعطينا شكرنا وإذا ابتلينا صبرنا

فقال له الشقيق البلخى : وماذا فى هذا ؟ فهذا حال الكلاب عندنا..إذا أعطيتها هزت ذيولها و إذا منعت عنها صبرت

لكن حاتم كان ذكى و اراد ان يفهم فسأله إذا كان هذا حال الكلاب عندكم فما هو حال الناس !!؟

فرد عليه البلخى : بأننا قوم إذا أعطينا صبرنا وإذا ابتلينا شكرنا…فالعطاء يحتاج إلى صبر حتى لا يتم الانفاق فى أوجه فساد و البلاء يحتاج إلى شكر لأن الله وضعنا فى مقام الأنبياء و الصالحين المعروف عنهم الابتلاء!!
