O Reliever of Distress, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ
The Prophet ﷺ holds a great status and lofty rank with his Lord, surpassing all other creatures. He is the Master of the Children of Adam, indeed the Master of the universe and its chosen creation. He is better than the angels and even superior to the Throne. Only his Creator truly knows his reality and his immense worth.
Allah has granted him many unique virtues, praised him in various forms, and mentioned him in the Qur’an with the highest attributes. Allah described him as a mercy:
“And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.”
And He said:
“There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. It grieves him that you should perish; [he is] concerned over you and to the believers is kind and merciful.”
Allah also described him ﷺ as a guiding light to the truth:
“O Prophet, indeed We have sent you as a witness and a bringer of good tidings and a warner,
And as one who invites to Allah by His permission and as a shining lamp.”
And He said:
“O People of the Scripture, there has come to you Our Messenger to make clear to you much of what you used to conceal of the Scripture and to forgive much. There has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book.”
Allah praised his character:
“And indeed, you are of a great moral character.”
As the Prophet ﷺ himself said:
“I was sent only to perfect good moral character.”
[Ahmad, Al-Bayhaqi, Al-Hakim in Al-Mustadrak, and Malik in Al-Muwatta]
Allah also honored him above the prophets before him in how He addressed them. Looking at the Qur’an, Allah called previous prophets by their individual names:
“O Noah, he is not of your family.”
“O Abraham, turn away from this.”
“O Moses, I am your Lord.”
“O Jesus, I will take you and raise you up.”
“O David, We have made you a vicegerent on the earth.”
But our Prophet ﷺ was never addressed simply by name in the Qur’an. Rather, Allah always called him with honorifics:
“O Prophet,”
“O Messenger,”
“O Covered One,”
“O Enshrouded One.”
He ﷺ deserved this status, and he deserves that we love him with all our hearts, for he bore suffering for our sake. His patience and tolerance in the face of harm are unmatched. Every patient person may falter, but he ﷺ, despite repeated harm, only increased in patience, and despite the excesses of the ignorant, he only increased in forbearance… (to be continued)
