Muslims of Latvia

 

I am a Latvian Muslim. Although I don’t live there, I feel qualified to answer this question, especially that I was in Riga for a visit just in October. The short answer is that the life for Muslims in Riga is fine, it isn’t much different from other places. Latvians are NOT aggressive towards Muslims and they do not stare at us, even at women in headscarves, which is nice. There is a Muslim cultural center in Riga’s Lacplesa street (search Facebook for MIRAS) that holds Friday prayers, gives nice lessons and where you can connect with fellow Muslims. They speak Latvian, Russian and English. They also preach moderate Islam. You might have difficulty finding halal meat but there is plenty of fish and diary. For halal meat, you need to ask in the cultural center. From time to time they buy animals and slaughter them in a halal way, then share the meat. So this isn’t a problem too.

You can also get the Five Prayer timetable from them and the timings of Iftar and Imsak for Ramadan. Speaking of Ramadan, during the summer the days are very long there, but during the winter it’s super short. Now that Ramadan moves towards winter direction, fasting days are becoming shorter.

Generally, don’t worry about it. Latvians are really good at focusing on their own life. They are not natural bullies and give people a chance. If you aren’t bothering them, they will be nice to you. Also please focus on projecting a positive image of Muslims!
