ﺃﻓﻴﺴﻤﻊ ﺭﺏ ﺍﻟﻌﺎﻟﻤﻴﻦ ﻗﻮﻟﻬﺎ ﻭﻻ ﻳﺴﻤﻌﻪ ﻋﻤﺮ ؟

Khawla bint Tha'labah was preparing for prayer when her husband, Aws ibn al-Samit, entered. At that moment, he desired her. Khawla replied that God's commandment could not be postponed. Aws swore that if she prayed before yielding herself to him, she would be forbidden to him like his mother's back. Khawla performed her obligatory prayer without fearing her husband's oath. After Khawla finished praying, her husband, Aws, came to her, caressing her. Khawla recoiled from him, and Aws was astonished and overcome with anger. Khawla said to him, "I am forbidden to you like your mother. Let us go to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) to see what he says about this oath." Khawla went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to complain about her husband, saying that after all these years with him, Aws was swearing by divorce against her. While she was complaining to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) and speaking with him, revelation descended upon him. The revelation came, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and said, "O Khawla!"

She replied, "At your service, O Messenger of God!" and stood up, overjoyed by the Prophet's smile. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then said to her, "God has revealed a verse concerning you and your husband," and then he recited to her the words of God Almighty: "God has certainly heard the statement of the woman who argues with you concerning her husband and directs her complaint to God. And God hears your dialogue; indeed, God is Hearing and Seeing. Those of you who divorce their wives by saying, 'You are to me like my mother's back...'" They are not their mothers. Their mothers are only those who gave birth to them. And they are certainly uttering an abomination and a falsehood. And indeed, Allah is Pardoning and Forgiving. And those who pronounce their wives unlawful to them and then retract what they said must free a slave before they touch one another. That is what you are admonished with, and Allah is All-Aware of what you do. But whoever cannot afford it must fast two consecutive months before they touch one another. And whoever cannot afford that must feed sixty poor people. That is so that you may believe in Allah and His Messenger. And those are the limits set by Allah. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment. (Surat Al-Mujadilah 1-4) Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: Tell him to free a slave. She said: By Allah, he cannot find a slave to free, and he has no servant other than me. He said to her: Then let him fast for two consecutive months. She said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he cannot do that. He said: Then let him feed sixty poor people a wasq of dates. She said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he does not have that. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We will help him with a basket of dates." Khawla said: "And I, by Allah, will help him, O Messenger of Allah, with another basket." The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "You have done well and acted correctly. Go and give charity on his behalf, and treat your cousin well." She said: "I have done so." Days passed, and one day, during his caliphate, Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) was leaving his house when Khawla stopped him and admonished him, saying: "O Umar, you were called 'Umayr, then you were called Umar, and then you were called 'Commander of the Faithful.' So fear God, O Umar, for whoever is certain of death fears missing out, and whoever is certain of death..." He feared the punishment. And Umar, may God be pleased with him, stood before her, listening to her words with reverence. One of those standing beside him said, "O Commander of the Faithful, do you stand for this old woman for so long?" Umar replied, "By God, even if you detained me from the beginning of the day until its end, I would not move except for the obligatory prayers." Then he asked those around him, "Do you know who this old woman is?" They said, "No." He, may God be pleased with him, said, "She is the one whose words God heard from above the seven heavens. Does the Lord of the Worlds hear her words and not..." Does Omar hear this? May God Almighty be pleased with him and grant him and her His pleasure.
