Seeking forgiveness (istighfār) is among the causes of the heart’s illumination, among the causes for the acceptance of supplication, and among the causes for abundance in provision. Seeking forgiveness was part of the regular practice of our Master, the Messenger of God ﷺ, which he never abandoned.
The Prophet ﷺ explained to us the best form of seeking forgiveness, saying:
“The chief of all prayers for forgiveness is that you say:
O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant. I remain faithful to Your covenant and Your promise as best as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge before You Your favor upon me, and I acknowledge my sin. So forgive me, for indeed none forgives sins except You.”
