Love for the Sake of God

Love for the sake of God is the foundation of unity in the Muslim community. All that God has commanded of kindness in dealing with parents, relatives, neighbors, companions, and everyone with whom a person interacts could not be fulfilled if these commands were contrary to human emotion. Rather, love for the sake of God is the basis of all such kindness in dealings.

Our Lord, Glorified and Exalted, has informed us of this beautiful manifestation through the موقف of the Anṣār in forming the first nucleus of the Muslim community on earth, when He said:

“And those who settled in the Home and accepted faith before them love those who emigrated to them and find no need in their hearts for what they were given, but give preference to others over themselves, even though they are in need. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul—it is those who are the successful.”
(Qur’an 59:9)

This love shown by the Anṣār toward the Muhājirīn—reaching the level of self-sacrifice—was praised by God as the highest model of the relationship between a Muslim and his fellow Muslim.

Love for the sake of God is among the highest manifestations of faith in God and one of the strongest bonds of Islam. For this reason, the Chosen One ﷺ spoke in numerous hadiths about the virtue of this noble quality and great moral trait—loving a person for the sake of God because of their obedience to Him.

Among these prophetic teachings is what Anas ibn Mālik (may God be pleased with him) narrated from the Prophet ﷺ:

“None of you truly finds the sweetness of faith until he loves a person and loves him only for the sake of God, until being thrown into the Fire is more beloved to him than returning to disbelief after God has saved him from it, and until God and His Messenger are more beloved to him than anything else.”

Among them also is what Abū Hurayrah (may God be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of God ﷺ said:

“God will say on the Day of Resurrection: ‘Where are those who loved one another for My Majesty? Today I shall shade them in My shade on a day when there is no shade except My shade.’”

And also what Abū Hurayrah narrated from the Prophet ﷺ:

“A man set out to visit a brother of his in another village. God appointed an angel on his path. When the angel came to him, he said: ‘Where are you going?’ He replied: ‘I am going to visit a brother of mine in this village.’ He said: ‘Do you have any favor you seek from him?’ He replied: ‘No, except that I love him for the sake of God.’ The angel said: ‘I am a messenger of God to you, informing you that God has loved you as you have loved him for His sake.’”

Among them is what Muʿādh ibn Jabal narrated that he heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say:

“God, Mighty and Exalted, says: ‘Those who love one another for My Majesty will have pulpits of light; the prophets and martyrs will envy them.’”

And what al-Barāʾ (may God be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of God ﷺ said:

“The strongest bond of Islam is love for the sake of God and hatred for the sake of God.”

There are many prophetic teachings that highlight the lofty status of love for the sake of God. Its impact on society is clear when such love spreads among its members. Imagine a community bound together by love for God—where no one wrongs his brother, undercuts his trade, proposes over his proposal, or harbors resentment against him. In such a case, the Muslim finds all of God’s commands easy when he loves other Muslims for the sake of God. And whatever God makes easy truly becomes easy.

Likewise, the immense role of love for the sake of God in spreading the Islamic message throughout the world is undeniable. For Islam to spread, the Muslim community must be an honorable model—so that when others see it, they are inspired to enter this religion. There is nothing more beautiful or effective than seeing Muslims loving one another for the sake of God, so that God loves them in return, empowers them, and eases their affairs.

We ask God to make us and all Muslims among those who love one another for His Majesty, and we ask Him to reward us by placing us in His shade on the Day when there will be no shade except His.

الحب في الله هو أساس وحدة المجتمع المسلم، إذ ما أمر الله به من إحسان في المعاملة للوالدين، والأقربين، والجار، والصحبة، وكل من يخالطهم الإنسان، ما كان له أن يتم باعتباره أوامر مخالفة للعاطفة، بل إن الحب في الله هو أساس الإحسان في هذه المعاملات كلها، وقد أخبر ربنا سبحانه وتعالى عن هذا المظهر البديع، في موقف الأنصار في تكوين أول نواة للمجتمع المسلم على الأرض حيث قال : ( وَالَّذِينَ تَبَوَّءُوا الدَّارَ وَالإِيمَانَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ يُحِبُّونَ مَنْ هَاجَرَ إِلَيْهِمْ وَلاَ يَجِدُونَ فِي صُدُورِهِمْ حَاجَةً مِّمَّا أُوتُوا وَيُؤْثِرُونَ عَلَى أَنفُسِهِمْ وَلَوْ كَانَ بِهِمْ خَصَاصَةٌ وَمَن يُوقَ شُحَّ نَفْسِهِ فَأُوْلَئِكَ هُمُ المُفْلِحُونَ ) وهذا الحب الصادر من الأنصار للمهاجرين الذي وصل حد الإيثار على النفس قد امتدحه الله على أنه النموذج الأعلى للعلاقة بين المسلم وأخيه المسلم.
والحب في الله هو أعلى مظاهر الإيمان بالله، ومن أوثق عرى الإسلام، ولهذا أخبر المصطفى ﷺ في أكثر من حديث عن فضل هذا المظهر الجليل، والخلق العظيم وهو حب المرء في الله لأنه من أهل طاعته، نذكر من هذه التوجيهات النبوية، ما رواه أنس بن مالك رضي الله عنه عن النبي ﷺ قال : ” لا يجد أحد حلاوة الإيمان، حتى يحب المرء، لا يحبه إلا لله، وحتى أن يقذف في النار أحب إليه من أن يرجع إلى الكفر بعد إذ أنقذه الله، وحتى يكون الله ورسوله أحب إليه مما سواهما ” [رواه البخاري].
ومن هذه التوجيهات أيضا ما رواه أبو هريرة رضي الله عنه قال : قال رسول الله ﷺ : ” إن الله يقول يوم القيامة أين المتحابون بجلالي اليوم ؟ أظلهم في ظلي يوم لا ظل إلا ظلي” [رواه مسلم]. ومنها ما رواه أبو هريرة أيضا عن النبي ﷺ قال : ” إن رجلا زار أخا له في قرية أخرى، فأرصد الله له على مدرجته ملكا، فلما أتى عليه قال : أين تريد ؟ قال : أريد أخا لي في هذه القرية. قال : هل لك عليه من نعمة تربها ؟ قال : أنى أحببته في الله عز وجل. قال : فإني رسول الله إليك بأن الله قد أحبك كما أحببته فيه. ” [رواه مسلم]
ومنها ما رواه معاذ بن جبل قال : سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول : ” قال الله عز وجل : المتحابون في جلالي لهم منابر من نور يغبطهم النبيون والشهداء. ” [رواه الترمذي]. ومنها ما رواه البراء رضي الله عنه قال ، قال رسول الله ﷺ: ” أوثق عرى الإسلام الحب في الله والبغض في الله ” [رواه ابن أبي شيبة].
وهناك الكثير من التوجيهات النبوية الشريفة تنبه على منزلة الحب في الله، ولا يخفى أثر ما إذا فشى الحب في الله بين أفراد المجتمع، فلك أن تتخيل مجتمعا متحاب في الله، لا يظلم أحدهم أخاه، ولا يبيع على بيعته، ولا يخطب على خطبته، ولا يوغر صدره، فيجد المسلم في هذا الحين أن كل أوامر الله يسيرة عليه، إذا ما أحب المسلمين في الله، وإنه ليسير على من يسره الله عليه.
وكذلك لا يخفى ما في الحب في الله من أثر عظيم في نشر الدعوة الإسلامية في أرجاء العالم كله، فإن الدين الإسلامي كي ينتشر لابد أن يكون المجتمع الإسلامي نموذجا مشرفا، بحيث إذا رآه الآخرون أحبوا أن يدخلوا في هذا الدين، وليس هناك أفضل ولا أجمل من أن يرى الآخرون المسلمين متحابين في الله، حتى يحبهم الله عز وجل، ويمَّكن لهم، وييسر لهم أمرهم.
ونسأل الله أن يجعلنا وجميع المسلمين متحابين في جلاله، ونسأله أن يثيبنا على هذا بأن يجعلنا في ظله يوم لا ظل إلا ظله.
