اتباع الهوى

The Shaykh sets here a measure for the seeker on the path to Allah ﷻ to know whether their desires are leading them or not.

The soul (nafs) feels heaviness in performing obligatory duties, especially when many others are also engaged in them.

But for the voluntary (nawafil) acts of worship, the soul feels a sense of distinction in performing them, because few people do them.

Therefore, the soul tends to hasten and increase in these voluntary acts, while it feels sluggish in fulfilling what is obligatory upon it.

This is a clear sign that the soul is following its desires (hawā).

وضع الشيخ هنا ميزاناً للسائر فى طريقه إلى الله عز وجل يعرف به إذا كان هواه يقوده أم لا
فالنفس يثقل عليها القيام بالواجبات حيث يشاركها فيه كثيرون
أما النوافل فتشعر بالتميز عند القيام بها حيث لا يفعلها إلا القليل
ولذلك تجدها -النفس- تسارع فيها وتكثر منها
بينما تتثاقل عن أداء ما وجب عليها
وهذه علامة على أن هذه النفس تتبع هواها
