Some of the early scholars (Salaf) specified the Prophet’s birth date with remarkable scientific precision.

When we determined the noble Prophet’s birthday as Monday, 9th of Rabi’ al-Awwal, 53 B.H.—as most probable according to us, by combining the preserved textual reports with astronomical and mathematical calculations using modern scientific tools—we reviewed some of the earlier efforts and determinations by the Salaf, may Allah be pleased with them. Among the most precise and earliest accounts we encountered is what Ibn Sayyid al-Nas narrated from Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi (d. 423 H.).

I could not find a comprehensive biography of him, except that he was a jurist in Baghdad in the fifth century H. His name resembles that of the famous mathematician Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi (d. 232 H.), founder of algebra. I do not know whether Ibn Sayyid al-Nas actually meant the jurist or the mathematician. Also, I could not find the source Ibn Sayyid al-Nas (d. 734 H.) used for this narration.

In any case, the precision of his determination indicates careful retrograde calculation. He states:

"The arrival of the Elephant at Mecca was thirteen nights before the end of Muharram, and the first of Muharram that year was a Friday. The Prophet ﷺ was born fifty days later, on Monday, eight days before the end of Rabi’ al-Awwal, that is, on the 20th of April. Our Prophet was sent on Monday, eight days before the end of Rabi’ al-Awwal, in the year 41 of the Year of the Elephant. Thus, from the birth to the Prophethood was forty years and one day. From his Prophethood to the first of Muharram in the year of Hijrah was twelve years, nine months, and twenty-nine days—making a total of fifty-three full years from the Year of the Elephant."

Notice the remarkable precision! Whether the Khwarizmi referred to is the jurist or the mathematician, he determined the Prophet’s birth date with very accurate calculations in both the Hijri and solar calendars: Monday, 8 Rabi’ al-Awwal, 53 B.H., corresponding to April 20. He also specified the beginning of Muharram in the Year of the Elephant as a Friday. He did not detail exactly how he reached this determination or his step-by-step scientific calculation—perhaps it was in a work not transmitted by Ibn Sayyid al-Nas. Nevertheless, the accuracy of the information reflects the meticulous reasoning and methodology used to derive it.

May Allah be pleased with them. Without their solid and reliable scientific efforts in their times, we would not have been able to write a single useful word. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.

بعض السلف حدد تاريخ المولد تحديدًا علميًا دقيقًا

ولمّا حددنا يوم المولد الشريف أنّه يوم الاثنين 9 ربيع الأنور 53 ق.هـ على ما ترجح عندنا بالجمع بين النصوص المحفوظة والاجتهاد الحسابي والفلكي بالأدوات العلمية الحديثة، كنّا وقفنا على بعض تحديدات واجتهادات السلف رضي الله عنهم في ذلك وأدقّها وأقدمها مما وقفنا عليه: ما ذكره ابن سيد الناس نقلًا عن أبي بكر محمد بن موسى الخوارزمي (ت.423هـ)، ولم أقف على ترجمة وافية له غير أنّه من فقهاء بغداد في القرن الخامس الهجري ويتشابه اسمه مع أبو عبد الله محمد بن موسى الخوارزمي الرياضي الشهير منشئ علم الجبر، ولا أعرف هل قصده ابن سيد الناس فعلًا أم قصد الخوارزمي الرياضي (ت.232هـ)، وكذلك لم أقف على مصدر ابن سيد الناس(734هـ) في نقله هذا.

وعلى أي حال فإن تعيينه دقيق جدًا ينم عن حساب القهقرى الدقيق الذي قام به إذ يقول: (( كان قدوم الفيل مكة لثلاث عشرة ليلة بقيت من المحرم، وكان أول محرَّم تلك السنة يوم الجمعة، وولد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم بعد ذلك بخمسين يومًا، يوم الاثنين لثمان خلت من ربيع الأول، وذلك يوم عشرين من نيسان -إبريل-، وبعث نبينا يوم الاثنين لثمان خلت من ربيع الأول سنة إحدى وأربعين من عام الفيل، فكان مولد إلى أن بعثه الله أربعون سنة ويوم، ومن مبعثه إلى أول المحرم من السنة التي هاجر فيها اثنتا عشرة سنة وتسعة أشهر وعشرون يومًا، وذلك ثلاث وخمسون سنة تامة من عام الفيل ))…

فانظر إلى دقة التحديد! والحسابات التي قام بها الخوارزمي رضي الله عنه -أيًا كان الرياضي أم الفقيه-، فقد حدد المولد الشريف تحديدًا حسابيًا دقيقًا جدًا بالهجري والشمسي معًا!!! بتاريخ الاثنين 8 ربيع الأول 53 ق. هـ الموافق 20 إبريل، وزاد عليه بتحديد يوم بداية المحرَّم من عام الفيل بأنّه يوم الجمعة، صحيح لم يذكر لنا كيف وصل لهذا التحديد وكيف كان حسابه بتفصيل علمي، وربما ذكره في مؤلف لم ينقله ابن سيد الناس اختصارا، فالله أعلم، إلا أن المعلومات نفسها ودقتها تفصح عن العقلية التي عملت على استخراجها استخراجًا دقيقًا …

فرضي الله عنهم، ولولا جهودهم العلمية الرصينة المتينة في أزمانهم ونقولهم الأمينة ما كتبنا كلمة واحدة مفيدة، فالحمد لله رب العالمين
