It is narrated that Qus ibn Sa‘idah and Aktham ibn Sayfi met.
One of them said to the other: “How many faults have you found in human beings?”
He replied: “They are too many to count. What I was able to count amounted to eight thousand faults. Yet I found one quality which, if practiced, would cover all these faults.”
The other asked: “What is it?”
He said: “Guarding the tongue.”
يروى أن قسَّ بن ساعدة وأكثم بن صيفي اجتمعا
فقال أحدهما لصاحبه: كم وجدت في ابن آدم من العيوب
فقال: هي أكثر من أن تُحصى، والذي أحصيتُه ثمانيةُ آلاف عيب
ووجدتُ خصلةً إن استعملتها سترتَ العيوبَ كلَّها
قال: ما هي
قال: حفظ اللسان
